Saudi Arabia replaces finance minister

Veteran Ebrahim Al Assaf 'removed from his position' and replaced by Mohammad Al Jadaan
MF Managing Director Christine Lagarde and Saudi Finance Minister Ebrahim Al Assaf, who was replaced late Monday.

Doha: Saudi Arabia on Monday sacked its veteran finance minister as the kingdom undergoes a major economic restructuring because of lower oil revenues.
Ebrahim Al Assaf "has been removed from his position", said a royal decree, one of a series of orders from King Salman, published by the official SPA news agency.
Al Assaf was replaced by Mohammad Al Jadaan, head of the Capital Market Authority which regulates the stock market.
A foreign diplomat had told AFP weeks ago there was talk of changing the finance minister, who is 67 years old and had held the post for 20 years.
Al Assaf, who has a doctorate in economics, was reassigned as a minister of state and will remain in cabinet.
Al Jadaan, a lawyer, had led the Capital Market Authority since January last year.
No replacement for him at the market regulator was immediately named.
Since 2014, global oil prices have collapsed by about half, accelerating Saudi efforts to move away from petroleum which still accounts for the bulk of government income.
The world's biggest oil exporter is projecting a budget deficit of $87 billion this year.
It has taken a series of austerity measures, including subsidy cuts, reductions in cabinet ministers' salaries and delays in major projects.
Earlier this year, Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, 31, who heads the main economic coordinating body, announced a wide-ranging plan to move the economy away from oil.
Al Assaf last week said Saudi Arabia's financial position remains strong despite sinking oil prices, although there is "some pressure" on bank liquidity.
"We have been able to maintain a good position in public finances," Al Assaf said.
Among measures to cover the fiscal gap, Riyadh has drawn on its foreign reserves and issued domestic bonds before Al Assaf, two weeks ago, supervised the kingdom's first international bond offering.
It raised $17.5 billion, reflecting strong global interest.
Official figures show the kingdom's reserves declined to $562 billion in August from $732 billion at the end of 2014.
Oil prices are hovering around $50 per barrel after hitting a 10-year low of less than $30 in January, down from a peak of more than $100 in mid-2014.The finance portfolio was the only cabinet position changed under the royal decrees which also replaced the heads of several agencies including the Saudi Food and Drug Authority.

13 dead, 20 trapped in China coal mine blast

Desperate search for survivors after gas explosion at Jinshangou mine in west of country
Rescuers work at Jinshangou Coal Mine in Chongqing, southwest China. Rescuers worked through the night at the privately owned Jinshangou mine where the explosion occurred before noon Monday, Xinhua News Agency reported

Beijing: Thirteen people have been found dead after a gas explosion in a Chinese coal mine and the status is unknown of 20 others still trapped, state media said Tuesday.
Rescuers worked through the night at the privately owned Jinshangou mine in the Chongqing region where the explosion occurred before noon Monday, Xinhua News Agency reported. Two miners escaped earlier.
Xinhua previously reported 15 deaths in the explosion, but said Chongqing deputy mayor Ma Huaping lowered the death toll in a press briefing early Tuesday, saying only 13 bodies had been found so far.
Local officials did not answer telephone calls from The Associated Press, and a person who answered the phone at the mine hung up when asked about the blast.
“We are still working all-out to search for the 20 missing miners, and will exert our utmost as long as there’s still a ray of hope,” Ma said, according to Xinhua.
Xinhua reported that the 400 workers trying to rescue more miners were being hindered by debris blocking some of the mine’s passageways.
Gas explosions inside mines are often caused when a flame or electrical spark ignites gas leaking from the coal seam. Ventilation systems are supposed to prevent gas from becoming trapped.
The State Administration of Work Safety ordered an investigation into the blast, “adding that those responsible must be strictly punished.”
Local officials in Chongqing also ordered the temporary shutdown of coal mines producing less than 90,000 tonnes a year, Xinhua said.
China’s mining industry has long been among the world’s deadliest. The head of China’s State Administration of Work Safety said earlier this year that struggling coal mines might be likely to overlook maintenance.
China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal but has announced plans to shutter more than 1,000 outdated mines, as part of a broader plan to cut down on overproduction.

Fuel prices in UAE to go up for November 2016

New fuel prices will come into effect from November 1

Abu Dhabi: Fuel prices in the UAE are set to go up for the month of November, the Ministry of Energy announced on Sunday.
The new per litre prices for November are Super 98-Dh1.90, up from Dh1.81 in October, Special 95-Dh1.79, up from Dh1.70; E Plus-91-Dh1.72, up from Dh1.63.
The price of diesel has gone up by 15 fils from Dh1.76 in October to Dh1.91 in November.

The new fuel prices are announced as global crude oil prices recover due to discussions among member countries of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) to curb output levels to stabilise oil prices.
Opec agreed on September 28 in Algeria to reduce output to a range of 32.5 million to 33 million barrels a day and decide how much each member should cut by its next meeting on November 30 in Vienna.
The agreement helped push oil prices to a fifteenth month high of about $50 a barrel earlier this month although they have subsequently fallen amid doubts the group will follow through in its pledge.
Iraq and Iran are insisting that they should be exempted from the deal as they try to ramp up production to increase their revenue. There are also doubts whether Nigeria and Libya will take part in the agreement.
Iraq says they need more money to fight Islamic state militants, whereas Iran wants to increase production to reach the pre-sanction levels of about 4 million barrels per day. Nigeria and Libya’s production is hit due to militancy and unrest.
Oil prices are currently trading slightly below $50 per barrel with the global benchmark Brent at $49.71 per barrel and the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) at $48.70 per barrel.New fuel prices will come into effect from November 1.

Birthday boy Diego Maradona feted in Abu Dhabi

Football legend celebrates turning 56 by officially opening new restaurant Café Diego

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CSjLZAyVAAA6onf.png

Abu Dhabi: Diego Maradona celebrated his 56th birthday in unusual fashion on Sunday evening – by officially opening his new restaurant in Abu Dhabi.
The football legend – looking slim and trim in a matching grey T-shirt and trousers – was greeted by hordes of frenzied fans at Café Diego in Nation Galleria mall on the Corniche.
He was joined by two of his footballing friends, Jorge Burruchaga, his ex-Argentina teammate, who scored the winning goal in the 1986 World Cup final, and Clarence Seedorf, the former Dutch international and four-time Champions League winner.
The trio – and, of course, particularly Maradona – were besieged by people seeking autographs and selfies once inside Café Diego.

The eaterie’s walls are adorned with memorabilia from Maradona’s illustrious career, including shirts from his various clubs such as Boca Juniors, Barcelona and Napoli.
It also features typical Argentine architectural designs reminiscent of the streets in Maradona’s hometown of Buenos Aires and serves a variety of traditional Argentine dishes.
Invited media such as Gulf News had been told that Maradona would hold a short press conference, but this did not materialise.

He did, however, speak in Spanish to thank his Abu Dhabi fans for attending the event.
Seedorf, the former Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan midfielder, also rejected Gulf News’ request for an interview.
The perpetually smiling Dutchman was, however, perfectly happy to accede to any request for a chat or selfie with fans.

A dedicated fan zone was set up on Saturday and Sunday for fans to pay homage to Maradona, featuring pictures and various memorabilia from his career.
The Argentinian superstar has become a familiar face in the UAE in recent years, first spending 14 months in charge of Dubai-based Arabian Gulf League outfit Al Wasl between 2011 and 2012.

He subsequently became a Dubai sports ambassador for the Dubai Sports Council, appearing at such events as the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Maradona rose to fame with Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors in his homeland in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before winning the La Liga title with Barcelona between 1982 and 1984.

He starred at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, almost single-handedly winning the tournament for Argentina, scoring five goals and making five assists.
Maradona was also a beaten World Cup finalist for his country four years later, when West Germany won 1-0.
In total, he scored 34 times in 91 appearances for Argentina between 1977 and 1994.
His most notable club spell came at the Italian side Napoli, for which he achieved cult status by inspiring them to five major titles, including two Serie A crowns, between 1984 and 1991.
In December 2000, Maradona was named joint Fifa Player of the 20th Century with Pele.

Emirates National Oil Company expands global presence

Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) has boosted its jet fuel supply capability to Hong Kong, South Korea, Oman, Kenya and Rwanda, establishing a strong global presence in 112 airports spread throughout 16 countries.

ENOC is celebrating 20 years of business. The company works with local suppliers at international airports to supply jet fuel to its customers. The company has experienced steady growth, selling more than 40 million U.S. gallons (USGs) per year outside the UAE.

“Since its inception in 1996, our aviation division has become a significant player in the region’s aviation sector," Saif Al Falasi, group CEO at ENOC, said. "After establishing operations at Dubai International Airport 20 years ago, the company’s jet fuel supply has seen exponential growth. Bolstered by Dubai’s rapidly growing aviation sector ENOC owes its success to the evolving story of this great emirate."

Based in the United Arab Emirates, ENOC provides most of the jet fuel needs at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

“Jet fuel makes up a significant portion of the operating expenses for an airline, so formulating agreements with major carriers is a competitive tender process,” Al Falasi said. “Through the team’s unique business acumen and dedication, along with Dubai’s burgeoning aviation sector, this business has grown significantly, and is ready to facilitate the continuous growth of the Emirate’s aviation sector.”

ENOC’s aviation business unit received an appreciation award for 10 years as an associate member of the Joint Inspection Group (JIG), which represents the global aviation fuel industry, ensuring standards for fuel handling, quality control and aircraft refueling.

Man who took video of D5 number car detained

Dubai Police said it is illegal to take videos or photographs of people without consent and post them online
Dubai-based Indian businessman Balwinder Sahani with the number plate he bought for Dh33 million.

Dubai: Al Barsha police have detained the man who took the video of the car with the D5 number plate that had been parked in a slot reserved for the handicapped. The number plate was bought by a Dubai-based businessman for Dh33 million at a Roads and Transport Authority auction on October 8. The video went viral last week.

Maj-General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant to the Dubai Police Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said the man, an Arab, worked in an area near where the incident was filmed.

The owner of the vehicle reported the video, and Dubai Police’s Cyber Crime Department identified the man who took the video leading to his detention on Thursday.

Dubai Police said it is illegal to take videos or photographs of people without first seeking their consent and post them online.

The police said there are proper channels available to report any kind of violations such as the ‘We Are All Police’ feature on the Dubai Police smart app that offers law-abiding citizens an avenue to bring to the authorities’ notice any violations by motorists.

Colonel Yousuf Al Odaidi, Director of Al Basha police station, said the owner of the car reported the incident at the station.

Referring to the complainant who had said that the car’s driver should not have waited at the spot, the car’s owner said this, however, does not give anyone the right to defame him.Col Al Odaidi said the man who took the video had stated that he had not meant to defame the car owner, but since he had noticed people crowding around the car because of its unique number plate, he had taken the video out of admiration. Subsequently, he sent the video to a relative and a friend back in his home country and was shocked to see the video going viral. The video showed the driver parking the car, while the car’s owner got in a few seconds later.

Yemen rebel missile shot down near Makkah

Al Houthis say they targeted Jeddah airport, where most of the foreign pilgrims in Makkah arrive
A Yemeni stands next to a crater following reported Saudi-led coalition air strikes.

Dubai: Gulf states participating in the coalition to restore the internationally recognised Yemeni government of Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi have slammed a rebel missile attack close to Makkah, describing it as a new low for the group.
Yemeni rebels launched one of their longest-range strikes against Saudi Arabia, firing a ballistic missile that was shot down near Makkah, the Saudi-led coalition fighting them said yesterday.

Al Houthi rebels launched the missile “towards the Makkah area” on Thursday evening from their Saada province stronghold just across the border, a coalition statement said.
“The air defence was able to intercept and destroy it about 65 kilometres from Makkah without any damage.”

The rebels confirmed the launch of a Burkan-1 ballistic missile into Saudi Arabia in a statement on their official news agency, but said it had been aimed at King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah, the kingdom’s busiest airport where most foreign pilgrims to Makkah arrive.

The Al Houthi-controlled SABA news agency said the missile “directly hit” the airport and caused massive destruction. There were no immediate delays or diversions affecting the airport yesterday.

Islam’s holiest sites are located in Makkah and nearby Madinah cities.
The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council condemned the attack which it described as “clear evidence” that the rebels are not willing to accept a political solution to Yemen’s 19-month-old conflict.

“This assault is undisputed evidence that the Houthi-Saleh group has gone too far in their violations and their refusal to comply with the will of the international community and its resolutions for a truce as well as the persistent efforts being made to reach a political solution to the crisis in Yemen,” Secretary-General of the GCC Dr Abdul Latif Al Zayani said in a statement.

Saudi foreign minister Adel Al Jubeir took to Twitter to condemn the attack, saying: “The Al Houthi-Saleh group that is backed by Iran took nothing into account in targeting this sacred land, the cradle of Islam and the direction in which Muslims around the world pray.”
Coalition spokesman Ahmad Al Assiri also launched a scathing condemnation in comments to Saudi news channel Al Ekhbariya, saying: “We assure everyone that just the way the head of the snake (Iran) failed at targeting nationals (Saudis) and Muslims in... Makkah, its tail will fail too, and we will cut it off.”
Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, criticised Iran for the attack. “The Iranian regime backs a terrorist group that fires its rockets on Makkah... Is this an Islamic regime as it claims to be?” he wrote on Twitter. Qatar called the attack “a provocation to the feelings of millions of Muslims worldwide”.
In a statement, Shaikh Abdullah said it "violates sanctities and goes beyond limits.
''This criminal, heinous act absolutely exposes the true nature of these militias and their allies.''

The coalition has been carrying out a bombing campaign against the rebels since March last year and there have been rebel strikes towards the bases from which the coalition mounts air raids. Saudi Arabia has deployed Patriot missiles to intercept the rebel fire.
Al Houthis and their allies, including forces loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, have a stockpile of Soviet-era Scud missiles and locally designed variants.
All GCC states, apart from Oman, are members of the Saudi-led coalition. The UAE itself is a major pillar of the alliance.

The coalition as well as the United States accuse Iran of arming the rebels, a charge denied by Tehran. Al Houthi rebels are a minority group that belong to the Zaidi sect of Shiite Islam. They fought six wars against Yemen’s government between 2004 and 2010. Makkah lies more than 500 kilometres from the Yemeni border.
It is the second time this month that the rebels have fired a missile of that range. On October 9, the coalition said it had intercepted a missile near Taif, the site of a Saudi airbase some 65km from Makkah.

In a separate incident on Thursday, rebel fire hit a two-storey building in the Saudi border district of Jazan without causing casualties.— With inputs from agencies

Apple delays AirPods wireless headphone paired with iPhone 7

The AirPods delay is the first hardware-related postponement in more than five years from the Cupertino, California-based company

San Francisco: Apple Inc. announced that its anticipated AirPods, a pair of wireless headphones, will no longer ship this month as planned. The AirPods were introduced in September alongside the iPhone 7, which was designed without a standard headphone jack.

“We don’t believe in shipping a product before it’s ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers,” Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, said Wednesday. Apple didn’t provide a technical reason for the delay nor a new shipping date.

The delay comes on the eve of Apple’s scheduled Thursday event for its updated Mac computer line, when the AirPods’ availability also was expected to be announced.

The AirPods delay is the first hardware-related postponement in more than five years from the Cupertino, California-based company. A version of the iPhone 4 in the colour white was announced in June 2010, but didn’t ship to customers until April 2011 because of a production problem. On the software side, Apple delayed the release of iTunes 11 in 2012 by a month to fix bugs.

Reviews of pre-production models of the AirPods suggested the device needed fine-tuning. “During my testing one of the AirPods had trouble holding a charge, so Apple swapped it out,” Walt Mossberg, of the technology website The Verge, wrote in September. Other reviewers noticed problems with music playback, a key feature of the AirPods.

The introduction of the product spurred criticism that the cordless earphones could easily be lost. Comedian Conan O’Brien mocked the device with a spoof of an iPod ad that showed people dancing and the AirPods flying out their ears into a sewage drain. The device is planned as part of a growing number of accessories that work around Apple’s most important product, the iPhone. Chief Design Officer Jony Ive last month referred to the AirPods as the start of a new wireless future for the company. The $159 accessory comes with a charging case that doubles as a mechanism to initially pair the headphones to the iPhone. With iCloud, the AirPods can automatically be matched with other Apple devices like computers and watches.

Profit climbs 27% to $5.1b at Google's Alphabet

  http://newshour-tc.pbs.org/newshour/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/RTX1NWLA.jpg

San Francisco: Google parent Alphabet on Thursday delivered higher profits for the third quarter, lifted by gains in mobile and video advertising as the tech giant narrowed losses on its “moon shots.”
Net profit climbed 27 per cent to $5.1 billion (Dh18.73 billion). Revenue rose to $22.5 billion from $18.7 billion in the same period a year earlier.
Shares rose nearly one per cent in after-market trades that followed the release of the stronger-than-expected earnings figures.
“We had a great third quarter,” Alphabet chief financial officer Ruth Porat said in the earnings release.
“Mobile search and video are powering our core advertising business and we’re excited about the progress of newer businesses in Google and Other Bets.”
It has been about a year since the California internet titan revamped its corporate structure, making Google’s internet operations a division of Alphabet and putting units such as autonomous cars and internet service balloons in an “other bets” or “moonshots” category.
The self-driving car effort that was once part of the X lab at Google — devoted to bold, futuristic projects — has become a separate business unit at Alphabet. Little has been revealed of its plans for going to market.
The loss reported from Other Bets in the recently ended quarter came to $865 million, compared with $980 million in the same period a year earlier.
“As we reach for moonshots that have a big impact in the longer term, it is inevitable that some efforts will have more success than other,” Porat said.
“We are taking the steps necessary to lay the foundation for a stronger future.”

New hardware strategy

Under its new structure, Alphabet is seeking to expand beyond its role as a search engine that provides advertising linked to queries. It has grown revenue in mobile search but is moving to further diversify its revenue stream.
Earlier in October, Google took on rivals Apple, Samsung and Amazon in a new push into hardware, launching premium-priced, in-house designed Pixel smartphones and a slew of other devices showcasing artificial intelligence prowess.
Google also revealed details about its new “home assistant” virtual reality headset and Wi-Fi router system.
But getting more heavily into hardware would entail new costs in the current quarter, Porat cautioned.
“We expect to spend more on marketing in the year-end quarter due to the new products,” she said.
The company recently put on hold its “Fiber” initiative, which aimed to deliver ultrahigh-speed residential broadband to a number of cities.Kansas City in 2011 became the first city chosen by the group to test its Google Fiber internet network, promising transmission speeds of 100 times that of current networks.

Watch: First look at UAE Hyperloop

Design, route for high-speed transit system between Dubai, Abu Dhabi unveiled, ahead of official launch

Dubai: The design of the proposed transport system that promises to take commuters from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in less than 15 minutes has recently been unveiled.
In a video released on Monday by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) Ideas shared snippets of the project’s design, ahead of the official launch on November 7th in Dubai.
The high-speed system, dubbed the Hyperloop One, will link the UAE capital with Dubai and drastically shorten the travel time between two cities.
“We are in a new time now where you can develop a new transportation system in very few years and change the world,” said Jacob Lange, partner of BIG, the team working on the design of the project.
The system will revolutionize the way people travel, allowing UAE passengers to traverse a 150-kilometre distance in a matter of minutes through air-cushioned pods speeding through a semi-vacuumed tube. The video shows a network of tubes on Y-shaped tilts, as well as a sneak peek of one of the pods that will pass through it.
Viewers can also check out a map that shows the future route of the Hyperloop. From the UAE capital,  the link will pass through Abu Dhabi Airport, Al Maktoum Airport and Dubai Airport. There will also be connections for Khalifa Port and Jebel Ali Port.

The team working on the project has recently arrived in Dubai.
“We’re not waiting for new technology like carbon nanofiber or anything in order to do this. We have everything we need to do it and it’s a matter of doing it in the best possible way,” Lange added.
“Making the Hyperloop here would be sort of a natural step in the evolution of this place, the city and the region.”

Watch: Trump's Hollywood Walk of Fame star smashed with axe

Republican nominee's coveted star destroyed by man protesting alleged sex assault
Donald Trump's damaged Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

Los Angeles: A man with an axe destroyed Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Wednesday in a video protest over sexual misconduct allegations dogging the Republican presidential candidate.
The protester, dressed in city construction worker overalls, can be seen on footage posted to YouTube and several other websites hacking away the gold lettering and camera logo from the tribute.
Giving his name as James Otis, he calmly explains he is “terribly upset” with 70-year-old Trump, who vigorously denies claims by almost a dozen women that he groped or was sexually aggressive toward them.

Four of my family members were sexually assaulted,” he says in the video, an amateur clip which appeared to show at least one professional crew filming the incident.
The man told a local news agency he had originally intended to remove the entire star from the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard.
He said he was going to auction it and donate the proceeds to Trump’s alleged victims — every single one of whom the real estate tycoon has vowed to sue after the November 8 election — but was unable to lift the slab.
“It was very difficult. The stone was like marble — hard to get through,” he said about an hour after the 5.45am attack on the star, awarded in 2007 for Trump’s work on “The Apprentice.”
He added that he planned to surrender to police, either Wednesday or Thursday, but was still working out arrangements with his attorney.

“I’m not frightened of jail and I’m certainly not frightened of Mr Trump,” he said, claiming to have been arrested around two dozen times for protesting various causes.
There was no immediate response from Trump, but the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which awards the honours, said the star would be repaired in the coming days and would remain covered in the meantime.
“When people are unhappy with one of our honorees, we would hope that they would project their anger in more positive ways than to vandalize a California state landmark,” chamber head Leron Gubler said.

This is not the first time Trump’s Walk of Fame star has been targeted.
In July, a Los Angeles street artist built a tiny wall of wooden planks topped with barbed wire around it, in protest at Trump’s campaign vow to build a wall on the Mexican border.
Last year, excrement was left on the star and someone drew a large yellow X over it.
A swastika and a mute symbol were also drawn on the red tile earlier this year.
Liliana Preciado, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department, told AFP the vandal had used both a pickaxe and sledgehammer on the star.
“We have surveillance video as well as video that has been uploaded to the internet that our detectives are taking a look at and they are confident they will be able to identify the suspect,” she added.
Walk of Fame stars are worth around $30,000, meaning anyone found to have destroyed one may find themself facing a felony charge.

Double earthquake hits Italy, bringing buildings crashing down

First 5.5 tremor may have saved lives as people rush out of their homes before second 6.0 quake
Residents walk past rubble in the village of Visso, central Italy on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 following two powerful earthquake

Rome: Twin earthquakes rocked central Italy on Wednesday – the second registering at a magnitude of 6.0 – in the same region struck in August by a devastating tremor that killed nearly 300 people.
At least one person was reported injured in the quakes, with the mayor of one mountain town saying that many buildings had collapsed as authorities rushed to assess the full extent of the damage.
The quakes were felt in the capital Rome, sending residents running out of their houses and into the streets. The second was felt as far away as Venice in the far north, and Naples, south of the capital.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) registered a first 5.5-magnitude quake at 5.10pm GMT (9.10pm UAE), with the second two hours later. In both cases the epicentre was near the village of Visso in the central Marche region.
"Many houses have collapsed. Our town is finished," Marco Rinaldi, mayor of Ussita, told Sky Italy television by telephone.
"The second quake was a long, terrible one," he said.
"I've felt a lot of earthquakes but that was the strongest I've ever felt. Fortunately everyone had already left their homes after the first quake so I don't think anyone was hurt."
In Rome, the quakes rattled windows and doors. The imposing foreign ministry headquarters was temporarily evacuated.
A Serie A football match between Pescara and Atalanta was halted for several minutes when the first tremor hit.
In August, a 6.0-6.2 magnitude quake flattened the mountain town of Amatrice – 70 kilometres from Visso – killing 297 people and injuring hundreds of others.

'Like bombs falling'

"One person has been lightly injured," Fabrizio Curcio, head of the civil protection department, told a press conference in the central town of Rieti, revising down an earlier toll of two.
Several other people were suffering from shock, he added.
The mayor of Serravalle del Chienti, Gabriele Santamarianova, said the quake felt "like bombs were falling".
"We saw a cloud of dust, we don't yet know what has fallen down. We'll see once the sun comes up."
Castel Sant'Angelo's mayor Mauro Falcucci told Sky: "There is no electricity. There are bound to be house collapses. On top of this there are torrential rains."
The little town of some 300 people is near Arquata del Tronto, one of the areas worst hit in the August 24 earthquake.
In Ascoli, another town hit hard in August, the mayor said spooked residents were fleeing by car.
Schools here and around the affected region will not open Thursday to allow officials to carry out safety checks.
Italy's national geophysics institute said the latest quakes were linked to the August one, which was followed by thousands of aftershocks, some of them very strong.
"Aftershocks can last for a long time, sometimes for months," geologist Mario Tozzi said.
Visso's mayor Giuliano Pazzaglini said telephone links in his town had been restored. But television images showed rubble piled outside a local church.
August's disaster caused an estimated four billion euros of damage, with 1,400 people still living in temporary accommodation.Around two-thirds of the deaths occurred in Amatrice, a beauty spot and popular tourist destination packed with holiday-makers when the quake struck at the height of the summer season.
